There are several different ways to market your brand, aka get your brand out there.  One of the most common and effective ways companies use to market their brand/product is through influencer marketing.  The name alone sounds interesting, but what is influencer marketing? Influencer marketing is a type of marketing that focuses on using key leaders to drive your brand’s message to a larger market.  Influencer marketing is nothing new; because we all can relate a major brand we like (i.e. Nike, Underarmour, etc.) to a person of influence.  In this article today we will be breaking down the proper steps on how to become an influencer and what to look for when hiring one.

What Is An influencer?

An influencer is someone who has the power to affect the purchasing decisions of others because of his or her authority, knowledge, position, or relationship with his or her audience. Someone that has a following due to whatever they are popular for.  Normally has a following with whom he/she actively engages, in which whom they have the power to influence the buying of a product/service. The size of the following depends on the size of his/her popularity.  Influencers can be any of the following:

  • Celebrities
  • Youtubers
  • Podcasters
  • Social Media Famous Persons (Instagram, TikTok Twitter & Facebook)
  • Bloggers


Influencers on social media platforms are people who have built a reputation for their knowledge and expertise on a specific topic. They make regular posts about that topic on their preferred social media channels and generate large followings of enthusiastic, engaged people who pay close attention to their views.

How to Become An Influencer

The average influencer can take home anywhere from $30,000 to $100,000 per year by promoting products like clothing, food, hotels and even vitamin supplements on their pages” (According to Fox Busines:   So how do you become an influencer to receive all of these perks?  First thing is to find your niche, or something you are passionate about.  What could you happily create consistent content about for a year without making any money?  Which leads to the next step, building your audience?  You want to have people follow you that share the same interest in as what you are posting.  Staying consistent is a major key to building your social influence by constantly learning your audience; you can stay on top of what will gain attention.  Another way to become a social influencer is to set yourself up so that brands approach you.  You can do that by making sure you have a business profile, having your email address very visible and posting the kind of content that the brands you want to work with would want to see.

What to Look For When Hiring An Influencer

You can’t just hire anyone that is “famous” to promote your brand/business.  Not only does the person have to have influence, but they have to be a fit with what you are marketing.  You can decide whether or not you want one major influencer, or several micro-influencers.  Next, you want to investigate them to see what kind of content he/generates.  Requesting feedback from other clients they have worked with is a good idea as well, that way you can see from other businesses if it was indeed a good invest.  Lastly, you want to set a price that matches your budget so that you do not overcompensate, or undercompensate for this marketing investment.
